10 Successful Harvard Application Essays

10 Successful Harvard Application Essays Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we’re probably going to notice. This topic is too broad and too loaded, whether you want to write about God, your mom or best friend. Letter Of Admission

Letter Of Admission When I went to the Summer Academy program last summer in Santa Fe, I found myself most looking forward to the math and science tutorials. While some others groaned that it was time to do our Archimedes reading for the next day, I excitedly isolated myself in the back of the library. As a high school Latin student, I find this especially impressive. Rowling’s incorporation of Latin, the foundation of many modern languages, lends the spells more universality (who wants spells in English, anyway?) and adds to the realism of the series. Antigone has become my favorite book because it wraps political and legal theory around complex characters and a compelling narrative. St. John’s is appealing because I will get to read some of my favorite texts for a second time, as well as many new works. My favorite aspect of studying at St. John’s was the environment of free discussion. I love that teachers and students alike go by the simple formal address. This practice helps to foster an atmosphere of respect and equality in the classroom, giving students the confidence to take intellectual risks. The students’ intellectual freedom lived on outside the classroom, inspiring our discussions of the readings over breakfast, during our afternoon free period, and during our evening group meetings. It focused entirely on Greek works, starting with Homer and the playwrights, transitioning into Thucydides, and then on to Plato and Aristotle. I enjoyed reading and discussing these works very much. I made an even more intimate group of friends who I still keep in touch with because they are more than friends to me, they are family. What excites me about St. John’s the most is that I have some previous exposure and that familiarity will improve both my understanding of these texts as well as my ability to discuss them. I have already read some of the books in the curriculum once, and so now I will be able to ‘read a book,’ during my second round of reading and discussion at St. John’s. My junior year in particular was my most interesting round of humanities. Prior to reading Antigone , I assumed that if I hadn’t read every book that pertained to the architecture of US government, I had at least heard of them. Antigone proved this assumption wrong because Antigone itself was a case study in the actual consequences of ideas discussed by political philosophers. In other words, Antigone humanized the esoteric and function-driven debates I’d studied last year. Finishing the play, I was ashamed that I’d harbored such skepticism at the outset of my reading. The most important aspect about the Summer Academy was finding my people, the ones who talked about Nietzsche and Plato at lunch and had long debates and poetry slams after Seminar. Making friends was never an easy feat for me, but at the Summer Academy, I found everyone I talked to felt like we had been friends for years. At seven o’clock the first evening, I was treated to my first seminar, and I fell in love with the school as well as its location. We discussed Herodotus’s description of the Battle of Thermopylae. Our tutor, Ms. Shukla, posed the question, “Is bravery reasonable? ” My fellow students and I talked more quickly than I could jot down notes, and I left the classroom feeling more energized and awake than I had two hours before. On our way back to Murchison, my dorm mates and I compared notes on what we had discussed in our different seminars and talked about Leonidas and the Spartans until lights-out. I loved reading so closely and spending the time discovering Archimedes’ theories. At school I would have despised the lesson about water displacement but when I was given the actual works by Archimedes and had to follow the logic on my own it made sense. During the tutorial I loved how the tutor went line by line asking questions for us to discuss and I loved drawing out the diagrams. J.K. Rowling clearly saw her application of appellations not as a burden, but an opportunity to enrich the story and world she had created and expand its reach. She leaves it to the readers to discover or concoct an explanation for why wizards shout bastardized Latin phrases to cast spells, stick their heads in fireplaces to chat with friends, and send letters via owl. An easy focus of Rowling’s accessible wordplay are the spells. Usually a crafted mix of Latin and English, their verbalization sounds “magical” but still allows readers to suss out a guess as to the spell’s purpose. The summer after my Junior year I signed up for a Summer Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. I immediately found my people and a continual comfort of my environment which automatically equated to the feeling of being home. Home is the feeling of being comfortable with the uncertainty and uncomfortable situations. The feeling of being involved, nervous and excited all at the same time.

Though I had decided that I could not go, I still felt concerned about the potential impact of the group's attendance, and wanted to gain more insight into the situation before deciding on a course of action. I shared my concerns with my partner and another student. My partner agreed with me, and we decided to consult his physician father. We quickly learned that Canadian physicians are not legally permitted to condone female genital mutilation, meaning that our attending the ceremony could have legal ramifications for our physician-run organization. Different prompt, different organization, different anecdote and message. If the essay is too similar to the previous one, you probably won’t ever one of these drafts ,and it will be somewhat a waste of time. But instead, you should write something that you think will make someone be measurably more likely to admit you to college. An admission decision will not be based on this section alone. My Village Essay 200 Words

My Village Essay 200 Words It's a huge turn off, for instance, when applicants write about their sports exploits or their pets. For students who are applying for college, one of the scariest parts of the admission process is writing the dreaded essay. This handout provides examples of college application essays and shows what admissions officers are looking for in an applicant. Join thousands of students and parents getting exclusive high school, test prep, and college admissions information. In these times of cut-throat competition just good grades are not enough to get you into a valuable program in a prestigious college. One application counselor explained the objective of an essay as convincing the admissions office “that you would make a great roommate.” Here is some advice to high school seniors, with apologies to Groucho Marx. You shouldn’t want to attend a college that would admit you for your value as a roommate. Thus, crafting a good admissions essay is significantly different than a good research paper. Likewise buying a research paper is also different from buying an admissions essay. After outlining your topic and making it as personal as possible, next comes the actual writing. But if you’re looking for someone to tell you that your essay is great as is and those six spelling errors are perfectly fine, well, you’ve come to the wrong place. We’d be mortified if a student of ours submitted essays with grammatical errors to college. We strongly suggest you not listen to this particular advice of Mark Sklarow, a man who has openly defied the very bylaws of the organization he leads. Well, for starters, who uses paper and pen these days? Secondly, it is preposterous to suggest that an independent college counselor should not address (and fix!) poor grammar or word choice. If a student makes a grammatical error, you bet we’re going to fix it. A common mistake that students make when tackling their college essays is to pick the wrong topics. In other words, the essay section of the application virtually invites all sorts of covert assistance, and sometimes outright cheating. High school grades and test scores can be boosted by expensive tutors, but they ultimately reflect the students’ own effort. No matter how rich they areâ€"and barring parental chicaneryâ€"the kids have to submit their real grades and take their own tests. The essays, however, can too easily be the product of co-authorship, with no way to distinguish between the contributions of the student and the coach. College Admissions

College Admissions Even if they don’t suspect you’re lying, you’ve missed your chance to showcase the real reasons that you’re a good fit for this school. Often, students feel pressure to write about a completely unique, never-before-seen essay topic that will help them stand out. When these students can’t think of anything “cool” or “special” enough, they make something up. You may have been advised to take risks with your college application essays, but you don’t want to be too risky. If you do write about someone who influenced your life, make sure that you only briefly describe them. Parents are blinded by love and perhaps perfection. Each student needs to be able to claim authentic ownership of their essays. Mom and Dad may be great help during the brainstorming process of generating essay topics. More than any other element of the application, the essay gives insight into who a student really is. So it should “sound” like the applicant, revealing personality, interests, quirks, personal style, and voice. Given what he shared in his essay, we can imagine Jerry being an active participant both in and out of the classroom. We hope these essays inspire you as you prepare to compose your own personal statements. The most important thing to remember is to be original as you share your own story, thoughts, and ideas with us. These selections represent just a few examples of essays we found impressive and helpful during the past admissions cycle. We believe that Rocio’s sense of perseverance will translate to her college experience as well. Although we had already learned about Jerry’s enthusiasm for debate in other parts of his application, this essay gave so much more depth into why this activity is meaningful for him. The example essay is one of the most basic essays in academic writing, but can be extremely difficult if you've never written one or do not know what to write about. Example essays focus on one main idea which you prove with several specific, convincing examples. Some parents can act as a sounding board without taking over the project, while others cannot. While it is okay to have a parent proof an essay, they are not always the best option. Asking someone who is slightly more removed from the application process may be the wisest route to go. While parents mean well, any constructive feedback may be misinterpreted, creating conflict at what can already be a stressful time. Teachers, guidance counselors, even friends are viable candidates when looking for a second opinion on your writing. If you're stuck on how to write an example essay, you can follow a few simple steps to dig yourself out of the rut and write an example essay that you can be proud of. I recommend that students try to find an adult other than their parents to help with essay editing. Admissions officers want to get to know applicants. There’s only so much that application readers can deduce from your extracurricular activities, transcripts, test scores, recommendation letters, and other application materials. Many times the best way to get a clear picture of a student’s goals, accomplishments, and character is to hear it directly from the student him or herself. In fact, it’s important to write in your authentic voice and avoid using “fancy” vocabulary just to impress admissions officers. Remember that the purpose of a college admissions essay is to help admissions officers get to know you. If your essay is filled with lies and exaggerations, then you’ve missed the point entirely. It’s possible that college admissions officers may suspect you’re lying, which is a poor reflection on your ethics and morals.

He says that as a young African American and Puerto Rican man from Brooklyn in a family in crisis, he might well have ended up “shot or in prison” but for great teaching. At the College Board, we regularly convene first-generation students on the threshold of college to help them plan their future. These students have been remarkably resourceful in navigating their path to college, yet they have much less to say about how they will succeed once there. They never say that their most important decision will be who their professors are. In general, students are extremely passive about seeking out great teaching. Applying to schools has become an endless choreâ€"one that teaches students nothing about what really matters in higher education. While there is no stated maximum for these questions, we advise our clients to be focused and succinct. With the admission essay being so important, no student would like to mess it up. Guide To Writing Ivy League College Admission Essays With Excellent Examples

Guide To Writing Ivy League College Admission Essays With Excellent Examples Word counts depend on the college or university in question. Start your essay with a good quote or a statement that reflects your whole theme perfectly. Make sure you write real experiences and do not make up stories. Recount an incident in your life when this happened to you, and reflect on how the experience changed you. Start with a few lines that introduce the topic of your essay in a compelling and personal way. Reflecting on those experiences will give you ideas for creative, unique ways you can portray them to admissions officers. When it comes to telling your story and sharing how valuable your experience will be to a school, portray it in the format that will be the most attractive to the school. Don't try to copy someone else's tone in your writing. You don't have to sound like anyone else, you just have to sound like you. An easy way to write in your own voice is by avoiding clichés. Don't use phrases that you've heard repeated over and over, unless you can put your own, creative spin on them. For example, your essay might focus on a situation where you found yourself questioning or challenging one of your own beliefs. Some places like the Common App will release the essay prompts from previous years, if you want to get an idea of what topics you might be asked to write about. Analysis Of The Book The Yellow Wallpaper - 984 Words

â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† is a story that I feel could be interpreted in many different ways. It is narrated by an unnamed woman who says she suffers from nervous depression. A common perspective of this story is that the woman is driven crazy by her husband because he kept her locked in a room and surrounded by hideous wallpaper. We can interpret that she saw herself inside of the yellow wallpaper and tries to escape. When she does escape, she crawls over her husband John’s fainted body. Does she actually suffer from nervous depression or is it something else? Should we believe everything she says in the story or does her mental illness cause her to see things for what they are not? How do her feelings toward the wallpaper change throughout the story? I have read this story four times now and each time I read this story, new thoughts and ideas came into my head. A woman, who remains unnamed until the end, narrates the story. It is told from her perspective, the perspective of someone who has a mental illness. I ponder whether she knows what she is talking about or not. In the eighth paragraph on page 76, she states that she has nervous depression. When I first read the story, I took it as it said and believed she had nervous depression. The other times I read the story, I began to question whether it was nervous depression or some other mental illness. How Laughing Gas or Nitrous Oxide Works

Laughing gas or nitrous oxide is used in the dentists office to reduce patient anxiety and relieve pain. Its also a common recreational drug. Have you ever wondered how laughing gas works? Heres a look at how laughing gas reacts in the body and whether its safe or not. What Is Laughing Gas? Laughing gas is the common name for nitrous oxide or N2O. It is also known as nitrous, nitro, or NOS. Its a nonflammable, colorless gas that has a slightly sweet flavor and odor. In addition to its use in rockets and to boost engine performance for motor racing, laughing gas has several medical applications. It has been used in dentistry and surgery as an analgesic and anesthetic since 1844 when dentist  Dr. Horace Wells used it on himself during a tooth extraction. Since that time, its use has become commonplace in medicine, plus the euphoric effect of inhaling the gas has led to use as a recreation drug. How Laughing Gas Works Although the gas has been used for a long time, the exact mechanism of its action in the body is incompletely understood, in part because the various effects depend upon different reactions. In general, nitrous oxide moderates several ligand-gated ion channels. Specifically, the mechanisms for the effects are: Anxiolytic or Anti-Anxiety EffectStudies indicate the anti-anxiety effect from inhalation of laughing gas derives from increased  activity of GABAA  receptors.  The GABAA receptor acts as the central nervous systems principal inhibitory neurotransmitter.Painkiller or Analgesic EffectLaughing gas reduces the perception of pain by facilitating an interaction between the descending noradrenergic system and the endogenous opioid system. Nitrous oxide causes the release of  endogenous opioids, but how this happens is unknown.Euphoria EffectNitrous produces euphoria by causing dopamine to be released, which stimulates the mesolimbic reward pathway in the brain. This contributes to the analgesic effect, too. Is Nitrous Oxide Safe? When you get laughing gas at the dentists or doctors office, its very safe. A mask is used to first administer pure oxygen and then a mixture of oxygen and laughing gas. The effects on vision, hearing, manual dexterity and mental performance are temporary. Nitrous oxide has both neurotoxic and neuroprotective effects, but limited exposure to the chemical tends not to cause a permanent effect, one way or the other. The primary risks from laughing gas are from inhaling a compressed gas directly from its canister, which could cause severe lung damage or death. Without supplemental oxygen, inhaling nitrous oxide can cause hypoxia or oxygen deprivation effects, including lightheadedness, fainting, low blood pressure, and potentially a heart attack. These risks are comparable to those of inhaling helium gas. Prolonged or repeated exposure to laughing gas can lead to a vitamin B deficiency, reproductive problems in pregnant women, and numbness. Because very little nitrous oxide is absorbed by the body, a person inhaling laughing gas breathes out most of it. This can lead to risks to medical personnel who routinely use the gas in their practice.

Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico Recinto Bayamon Bienestar y Calidad de Vida La depilacion Masculina Alexander Rosa Rosa Y00224459 Bienestar y Calidad de Vida EGEF 3000 Prof. Carlos J. Santiago Bibiloni Introduccion La depilacion masculina es un tema que hoy puede abordarse sin problema, con total confianza. We will write a custom essay sample on Depilacion Masculina or any similar topic only for you Order Now Cada vez son mas los hombres que acuden a este tipo de proceso ya sea por razones esteticas, higiene o deportivas. Roles and Skills of an Event Organiser free essay sample

The required skills of an event organiser are such as the following: * Communication and Interpersonal skills * Time management * Problem solving * Negotiating * Planning * Monitoring * Evaluating * Resource management Communication and Interpersonal skills Communication and interpersonal skills play a big role when organising an event because communicating with others will come across quite a few times such as agreeing on the size of the venue, queries from the attendees or even when deciding on the number of people to cater for. Organising a large even can be quite challenging and using interpersonal skills can have a huge influence on how successful the event will be. For example, asking listening to what others are telling you will be an effective interpersonal skill to use because other people recognise mistakes before you and they can give you new ideas and can give advices on the areas you need improvement on. Time Management A role of an event organiser is to carry out a number of tasks at the same time which requires good time management. We will write a custom essay sample on Roles and Skills of an Event Organiser or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Good time management is when you keep everything on track. When planning an event we can come across with time management mistakes which are such as the following: * Wasting time doing activities which are irrelevant * Waiting for someone to complete a task before moving on to the next one * Not being organised Problem Solving During an event the event organiser can face problems but skilled event organisers would have thought about the problems they could face and will have a back-up plan which is called contingency plans. For example if you want to show a presentation during the event you will have to first check the services already provided at the venue and take the equipment required which isn’t provided there with you on the day. Negotiating Negotiating skills are essential in event organising. It is not a skill to threaten the person you are taking to but it is a skill where at the end both sides are happy about the decision made and that they both agree. Usually event organiser’s negotiate about a price of something but you have negotiate with the catering team as well on how many courses will be served during the event. For example if you are renting a hall for the event and the property owner asks for ? 1,500 then you can negotiate the price and reduce it to an amount where both sides are happy and have agreed on it. Planning Another skill the event organiser has to have is being able to plan out the event. The event organiser has to make sure that everything goes to his or her plan. Planning doesn’t just focus on the event itself but it also has to include other events or other factors. If there are a few events going on at the same time at yours then it will cause poor attendance. A factor that the event organiser has to watch and plan the event based on the weather. For example if you are planning to hold the event outside then you has to check the weather forecast and also has to have equipment ready if it rains all of a sudden. When planning for a event the event organisers has to consider the following: * Whether the event needs to be inside or outside * Whether the event is linked to a festival or tradition * Whether the event depends on other factors Monitoring An event organiser should continually keep track of how the event is progressing. They should check and even if possible double check that everything is controlled and up to date. Monitoring involves checking many things such as the following: * Bookings * Deliveries * Advertising and publicity * Staffing * Security A good event organiser will be able to monitor many things at the same time to ensure that all parts are linked and that they come together at some point. Evaluating A very skilled event organiser can recognise not only the good things of their event but can also see those things that went wrong or didn’t come out as expected. In order to become a successful event organiser the organiser should be able to make fair judgements about the event and make improvements for the next time. The organiser should be objective about their judgements they should see the mistakes with his or her mind not with his or her feelings. Resource Management Resources include any physical items, expenses or other costs. This can be building, ICT equipment the catering or even a special feature or entertainment or display that is brought in for the event. Some equipment can be expensive so a good event organiser with good resource management skills would be able to make most of their resource. P2: Explain the role of an event organiser. In order to carry out his or her roles properly an event organiser must be aware of his or her roles before starting anything. If they don’t know their role then everything will be unorganised and the event will end up in a disaster. Here are the roles of an event organiser: * Organising * Programme * Documents * Procedures * Legal requirements * Limits of role Organising When you start organising an event the first thing you have to do is find and book a venue which is suitable for your event and also it is important to identify the cost. You then need to organise a catering which is suitable to your venue because you cannot serve sandwiches in a hotel and you cannot provide three courses in a park. Plan the timing, orders and when you need to them to be delivered. You will also buy or reserve facilities such as sound system or a projector if you are hoping to use it. Programme A programme is a list of activities or what will be happening during the event. It helps the guests/attendees know what will happen it basically guides the guest to how the event is structured out. It is a outline of what will happened and gives details of special guests, speeches, entertainment, prize-giving, free gifts and etc. The length of time for the event will influence the programme, for example if it’s a whole day event the programme will guide guests on when to have lunch or dinner. Documents Most events need some form of hard copy of soft copy (which is a version of a document such as PDF) given out. Documents which are essential are such as the following: * Background to the event The agenda or schedule * Event papers * Information about travel arrangements * Information about accommodation * Information about additional arrangements There are some which are not given to attendees, those are used by organisers to follow the progress of the event, and for example the budget plan isn’t given out to guests. Procedures When organising an ev ent there are sets of procedures which event organisers have to follow. You need to follow the procedures or you will face serious problems if something goes wrong. Procedures usually depend on the size of he organisation, the type of event, the place and the people who are involved. Legal Requirements There are legal requirements that need to be considered when organising an event such as the health and safety and age requirements. For example, if the event is 16+ the event organisers have to find a venue which will allow teenagers aged 14 and they have to make sure that the 14 year olds doesn’t get served alcohol by a stamp or something. Most importantly the event organiser should be aware of the emergency procedures. For example if a fire is set of the event organiser should know the meeting point and the equipment needed. They must have a risk assessment draw attention to any issues found when organising and prevent something dangerous to occur. The legal requirements are usually covered by a contractual agreement. The contract has sets of elements which need to be included in the event, such as the following: * Venue * Catering * Insurance * Advertising or promotion Limits of Role The event organiser should be aware of what they can and cannot do. They should know the level of authority they have for example in some events the event organiser cannot sign a contract because they might not have enough authority for final decision.

The short stories of Katherine Mansfield Essay Example

The short stories of Katherine Mansfield Essay Example The short stories of Katherine Mansfield Paper The short stories of Katherine Mansfield Paper Essay Topic: Literature The short stories of Katherine Mansfield can largely be divided into two distinct categories. The first of which deals mostly in satirising and somewhat flippantly portraying the affluent middle class society of early twentieth-century England. Such short stories are often seen by critics as failing to contend with any serious or significant social issues, and are rather a mocking imitation of bourgeois life. The latter group of Mansfields short stories can be said to depict a somewhat deeper and more understanding sense of life, in which Mansfield explores a plethora of emotional and psychological concerns through her characters. It is in these stories where the joys and terrors of sexuality and mortality can be found through Mansfields exploration of an ordinary mind on an ordinary day. Perhaps the story that most clearly delves into the issue of sexuality is Mansfields most provocative and controversial short story Bliss. Upon its publication, Bliss was subject to much criticism; Virginia Woolf claimed that it was uninteresting, while T.S. Eliot asserted that it was without moral and social ramification. Though it is clear to see why such a radical story might not have been appreciated in its time, Bliss is far more than the predictable love-triangle tale is appears to be from the surface. The underlying theme of the story is a tentative insight into the nature of female sexuality. The scene in which Bertha and Pearl stand next to one another admiring the tree in the garden is clearly symbolic in terms of sexuality and undoubtedly tests the boundaries of female homoeroticism. And the two women stood side by side looking at the slender, flowering tree. Although it was so still it seemed, like the flame of a candle, to stretch up, to point, to quiver in the bright air, to grow taller and taller as they gazed almost to touch the rim of the round, silver moon. The pear tree in the story comes to symbolise Berthas character, she sees aspects of herself in it. The fact that she dresses in white, green and jade for the dinner party (the same colours as the tree) is no coincidence, and is a suggestion of her subconscious comparison between herself and the tree. In a similar way, Pearl is likened throughout to the Moon through Mansfields imagery. Pearl is dressed all in silver, the same colour the Moon is described as, her fingers like moonbeams, are so slender that a pale light seemed to come from them. Her cool arm, heavy eyelids and mysterious half smile all seem to imply a similarity between Pearl and the Moon. Furthermore, Pearls name itself can be seen as an example of imagery, as a pearl can be likened to the Moon in terms of its shape and colour. With this in mind, the scene symbolises the sexual tension between Bertha and Pearl, and Bertha subconscious homoerotic desire for Pearl. The two characters gaze outwards through the window in consideration of their two respective symbols. The juxtaposition of the tree and the Moon, and the fact that the tree is stretching upwards in an attempt to reach (and presumably penetrate) the round Moon, can be seen as Berthas desire for Pearl. The fluctuating experience continues immediately after this scene, as Bertha suddenly moves away from Bertha, and begins to fix her sights upon her husband once again. As those last words something strange and almost terrifying darted into Berthas mind. And this something blind and smiling whispered to her: Soon these people will go. The house will be quiet quiet. The lights will be out and you will be alone together in the dark room the warm bed We are told at this point that for the first time in her life Bertha Young desired her husband, yet it seems odd that this sudden shift back towards her husband should come straight after her moment with Pearl Fulton. Her emotions and strong feeling of lust for her husband are triggered by her subconscious desire for Pearl. Through this radical example, Mansfield explores the free flowing sexuality of women in early 20th century England, and delves into the concept of lesbianism something almost unheard of at the time of writing. In terms of Mansfields juxtaposition of the ordinary with the sexual, throughout Bliss, Berthas descriptions of the most mundane and routine things have sexual undertones. She takes note of Pearl rolling a tangerine between her fingers, and describes how Harry loves the white flesh of a lobster. Food and the concept of eating seem to evoke a deep sense of lust in Bertha and as such contribute to the fluctuating experience of an ordinary mind. The twist at the end of the story is somewhat ironic. Whilst Bertha has imagined throughout, the possibility of engaging in sexual relations with both Harry and Pearl, she later finds out that the pair are already lovers. By reaching this conclusion, Mansfield does not grant Bertha her bliss (repressed sexual desire), she has become a third wheel and an outsider in the relationship. Mansfields outlook on death and mortality can also be clearly seen within her work. One story that clearly deals with the question of mortality is At the Bay, and like Bliss this tale has been praised for its seemingly simplistic storyline combined with a deep and significant underlying meaning. Through symbols and motifs, Mansfield raises questions about the nature of our existence. The key recurring motif, which runs throughout, is that of the sun. The imagery Mansfield chooses to use through the story creates a deep sense of interconnection the feeling that everything around us is relevant and purposeful. The story, though seeming to be concerned mainly with family relationships and the tension that inevitably comes with them, also takes into account the anxiety of death, which was a huge concern at the time. The sun in the story is seen as a powerful and fiery force, marking time and creating routine. Its inescapable and monotonous schedule not only creates unity amongst all humans, but also limits all actions. The link created between time and the sun is significant in highlighting Mansfields concern with the shortness as well as the limitations of life. Even the characters within the story seem to recognize the influence and potentially damaging nature of the sun. Stanleys daily routine mirrors the sun he wakes as the sun rises, and returns home when it sets. Meanwhile, other characters such as Mrs Fairfield seek to avoid the sun through the course of the story and Uncle William is referred to, as we hear that he went to the mines, andgot a sunstroke there and died. There is an undertone of death, and anxiousness about morality that run throughout, and these can be strongly linked to the presence of the sun. In conclusion, it is clear to see the way Mansfield creates a fluctuating experience of an ordinary mind, and hints strongly at the joys and terrors of both sexuality and mortality. In Bliss we are allowed to see a fairly biased insight into the life of a woman with free flowing sexual desires which transcend the bounds of heterosexuality. Mansfields clever imagery and juxtaposition of the ordinary with the strong sexual desires of Bertha clearly create the impression of an ordinary woman trying to break free from normal social constraints and express her repressed sexual desire. Bertha is not only curious and excited about her subconscious thoughts, but at the same time terrified about the implications and consequences they may have. The idea of ordinary minds and ordinary lives continues in At the Bay, where Mansfield cleverly creates a story which seems to be concerned with family ties and tensions, yet beneath the surface delves into a whole host of issues regarding mortality and death. The sun is highly significant in At the Bay, the characters in the story live by it and at the same time fear it. It controls their lives and has the potential to bring death. It is through the sun that Mansfield highlights the anxieties of death and mortality.
